Media Literacy Minute: Project Look Sharp
Welcome to this week’s edition of Media Literacy Minute! This week we’re taking a new approach. Last month I presented on Digital and Media Literacy at the NYSCATE conference. During the presentation, several attendees recommended a resource to me. It was so good, I wanted to share with our Media Literacy Media readers.
Project Look Sharp, an initiative of Ithaca College, offers a comprehensive suite of free resources designed to integrate media literacy into classroom curricula across various subjects and grade levels. Their materials include curriculum kits, lesson plans, and professional development tools aimed at enhancing critical thinking and media analysis skills among students.
Key Offerings:
- Curriculum Kits and Lesson Plans: Covering subjects such as U.S. History, Global Studies, Environmental Studies, Health, and Psychology, these resources provide educators with ready-to-use materials to facilitate media literacy education.
- Professional Development Resources: Project Look Sharp supports educators through training materials and guidance on effectively incorporating media literacy into their teaching practices.
- Integration Strategies: The organization offers strategies for embedding media literacy across various subjects and grade levels, promoting critical engagement with media content.
- Constructivist Pedagogy: Project Look Sharp emphasizes active learning where students construct meaning by critically analyzing media messages. This approach encourages learners to engage with content deeply, fostering critical thinking and inquiry skills.
By providing these resources, Project Look Sharp empowers educators to cultivate students’ abilities to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media, fostering informed and engaged citizenship in the digital age.
